Not Every Oil is the Same
I love how dōTERRA focuses on scientific research and purity with their high level of internal and 3rd party testing of every batch, along with evidence and a proven track record when oils don't meet this standard.
Many people think that because they created their own standard that this certified pure therapeutic-grade standard is a sham. What you many not realize is that dōTERRA founding executives left their previous major competitor organization because that organization's leadership didn't agree with their vision on this highest standard of quality backed by scientific evidence. They were so passionate about this that they chose to leave.
dōTERRA's leaders at the time worked through the recession of 2008 to create a new company with this vision for making the highest quality essential oils in the world with the scientific and clinical research to back their vision. They did this during a time of economic uncertainty, taking 2nd mortgages on their homes, and using their life savings to finance their dream.
There is not another major competitor that tests every batch of oil to ensure they are 100% pure (that means no contaminants like pesticides or other even unintentional contaminants are present) and therapeutic-grade (that there is evidience to support the clinical benefits on the human body). Those are two different claims by the way. From the dōTERRA webiste, certified pure means that there are no added fillers, synthetic ingredients, or harmful contaminants in their essential oils that would reduce their efficacy., They take it a step further by partnering with accredited organizations to develop clinical and scientific research that show evidence to the therapeutic benefits of the oils. In my laymans terms, this means not only do they make sure it's pure, they show evidience of the benefit on our health and well-being.
dōTERRA not only tests for quality and purity, they test the therapeutic results on the
human body.
Certified pure means: 1️⃣️ Every batch of oil collected is sent to Aromatic Plant Research Center (APRC) a 3rd Party unaffiliated scientific research center to do the 1st round of rigorous testing. APRC then sends dōTERRA the results. 2️⃣️ dōTERRA then completes their own internal testing and compares the results to make sure there is an identical match with what APRC sent. They actually compare the reports to ensure that no contaminants are present and that the oil is just that - the pure essential oil. If at any point in the process, the oil fails the rigorous 100% purity claims, they will not sell it. ✅ This two-step testing process happens with every batch (not just periodically as other oil companies state. Did you year that? Yes, they test literally every batch. I don't know about you, but I am sure that I would want to be certain that my oil is exactly what it says on the bottle.
3️⃣ Specialized testing.
Therapeutic-grade means:
Oils undergo a myriad of clinical and scientific research as to how it affects processes within the body. dōTERRA partners with prominant, accredited, unbiased, independent universities and other research organizations to unravel these complex processes and show evidence to how the oil effects the human body. They test the effects on the cells, tissues, and pathways. In fact, though this research, scientists have uncovered the complex essential oil pathways for inflammation, metabolism, among others. No other oil company is doing this kind of ground-breaking research!
I learned that 80% of oils by major
competitors that are tested were contaminated or shown not to be pure. This was even from brands that claim they are 100% organic, pure, and therapeutic. This is a staggering statistic. This could mean something got into the batch unintentionally, or worse yet, adulterated to mimic the essential oil. And, what it shows is that likely, the other brands available by companies who aren't committed to this level of quality, are likely not essential oils at all.
What does all of this mean? Well, I don't know about you, but quality and purity are important to me. The fact that dōTERRA is committed to this and to investing in the scientific and clinical evidence of therapeutic benefit is one of my top reasons for choosing dōTERRA.
Did you know that you can find the GCMS reports on every dōTERRA bottle! Here's how you can check for the quality of every dōTERRA bottle of oil:
Go to the Source to You webiste
Type the lot number that appears on the bottom of the dōTERRA bottle
In no way am I here to bash any other essential oil companies. I also am not here to discount a purely aromatherapy mind-set that oils should not be taken internally. The fact is, aromatherapy is just one of the perspectives on essential oil use. I am also not here to discount any small-scale brands that are run by trustworthy individuals. I know a few small operations and will purchase oils from these others based on trust. But, I would never take those internally. What I trust is that dōTERRA's oils are tested and pure to take internally and that they have a broader use than what aromatherapy can describe. I am excited that the evidence is there to support this. Not all oils are the same and I would never ingest an oil from another company.
I can easily look on the back of my dōTERRA oil bottle and track the purity and get links to the reports showing this. That's excellence!

***Like everything in my life, I am not suggesting that you ingest essential oils internally. I am of the mindset that each of us must make choices based on our own research, unique situations, and intuition. We are each unique and what is right for one may not be right for others. I spend a lot of time researching these oils so that I feel safe using them.
