Myths about Life Coaching
I've met many people who are confused about life coaching. I've heard a lot of misconceptions:
"Oh! I need someone to give me advice on how
to live my life."
"Your life must be perfect!"
"You must be a therapist then too, right?!"
🔅My life is perfect.
Contrary to popular opinion, life coaches don't have all their shit together all the
time. We are human too and have all the complexities of life. We're not all namaste all the time. Yes, we are hyperaware and passionate about personal growth, but we aren't perfect. In fact, most of us who are there to guide you have been through our own hell and back. Many of us are recovering perfectionists. Being through the darkness ourself allows us to share vulnerable parts of ourselves to help you to open up. We've been there too! We've been able to learn life changing tools to get ourself unstuck and thus, have the abiltiy to help you.
🔅I'm there to fix your problems.
Nope, this is not how I operate at least. You don't need fixing. I am there to help you dissolve the limitations and blocks that are getting in the way of being your best self, and help you to learn tools that will guide you in your process. I am there to help you to thrive at being you.
🔅I'll give you advice on how to find your life purpose.
Nope again! I will not give you advice on how to find your life purpose. I will however, ask you loads of questions to have YOU find the answers. And, I will use tools that help you to become more intimate with your intuition, thus leading you toward what feels good to you, and help you to learn how to know when things don't feel good. I may encourage you to try certain practices that resonate with you to help you listen to, and follow your intuition, but I am not here to give you advice. I believe you have the answers to your own problems and that for whatever reason, you haven't been able to tap into it and therefore haven't been able to follow it and make decisions based on your essential wisdom.
🔅You can create a plan for me.
No. Again, I have mad skills at planning, but the plan must come from you. Yes, I will help you to organize the plan into actionable steps, and then you will own it.
🔅You can help me to be accountable.
No. It is my perspective that we can only be accountable to ourselves. Yes, I have loads of skills and experience to help you to detail out a plan and all the subtasks underneath it, and you are the one who will need to take action. Yes, I am great at encouraging you, but I am not the one who owns the plan and the outcomes. You own the results and the actions to achieve them. The greater energy you put forth in the coaching relationship, the greater probability you'll achieve a positive outcome. If you're not doing the work that you set out in your plan, then I might challenge you that it may not be something that truly aligns with your inner wisdom. Hmmmm....
🔅Life coaching is the same as therapy.
No. While I will get to know you and your story, I am not there to provide talk therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, or any other type of therapy. I am not a therapist. I am there to help you remove blocks based on the limiting story you've been believing, and help you to create more satisfaction in your life. I am there to listen, offer my observations of potential limiting beliefs, but am truly relying on you to provide the answers. Therapy is a useful and sometimes necessary route given certain situations, and can be a nice compliment to life coaching.
Of course, these myths are from my perspective. Some life coaches are also licensed therapists, and some life coaches may be there to create a plan and provide project management skills and don't help you to identify and dissolve limiting beliefs. Some life coaches may do all the things I said I don't do. What I know is that life coaching has been the biggest paradigm shift I've ever experienced!
